Golden West Women Are Out of the State Volleyball Finals

Golden West’s unbeaten volleyball team lost twice Sunday and was eliminated in the State women’s tournament at American River College in Sacramento.
Cerritos defeated the Rustlers in the winners’ bracket final, 15-3, 15-7, 15-9. Golden West had been ranked No. 1 and Cerritos No. 2 in the state most of the season.
The Rustlers were then eliminated from the tournament Sunday afternoon by DeAnza, 15-7, 15-9, 15-10.
Sophomore outside hitter Tracy Schriber had 17 kills in the loss to Cerritos and freshman Becki Gehlke had 16 kills in the loss to DeAnza.
Golden West had won the past two State titles and 64 matches in a row, including two in the State tournament. The Rustlers finished the season 29-2.
“We had a good season,” Coach Albert Gasparian said. “But physically we needed more options. With only eight players when something went wrong, there was no where to turn. We’ll be ready next year.”
In the College of the Sequoias women’s basketball tournament:
Golden West 68, Kings River 61--Melanie Iwamasa scored 24 points and Cinnamon Basco added 17 for Golden West in the third-place game.
