Train Noise

In response to “Horns of a Dilemma,” Nov. 23 regarding noise from trains:
As a resident of Silver Lake, the nostalgia of the train whistle is not foreign to me. With the freight yards nearby and the “main line,” which runs through Glendale just to the north, it is nostalgic because of the distance.
But if my residence were within a quarter mile of the train track, I would certainly resent hearing a 105-decibel horn as the train approached a distant crossing. It would seem with today’s technology the horns could be placed at the crossings, pointed at the cross traffic, sounded at lower decibels because of their proximity with the opposing traffic, and be operated remotely by the approaching train.
