With leading-scorer Jody Caruso and Kim Korsmeier, the first player off the bench, each sidelined with the flu, El Dorado girls’ basketball Coach Gary Raya wasn’t sure how the Golden Hawks would fare in the La Puente tournament last week. But thanks to DeBruijn, who averaged 19.5 points and 10.8 rebounds in the tournament, El Dorado (11-0) won the title. DeBruijn, who moved to off-guard from forward, was named the tournament’s MVP after scoring 23 points in a 65-55 victory over Pomona Garey in the championship game.
Other top performers:
Mandy Wheeler, who scored the winning goal with a minute remaining to give Los Alamitos a 2-1 victory over Long Beach Poly in the championship of the Cerritos tournament.
