School: University
Sport: Wrestling
Weight division: 171 pounds
Class: Senior
Kim, who finished fifth in the Southern Section Division 2-A finals at 171 pounds last season, has improved greatly in the early going this season and last week won the 171 title in the El Cajon Invitational at Grossmont College. Kim, the only Orange County wrestler to win a title, dominated his weight class, pinning three of four opponents, including Escondido Orange Glen’s Jorge Ruelas in 46 seconds in Tuesday’s final. “He’s been more patient rather than just trying to go out and throw a guy on his back,” said Steve Stewart, the first-year coach at University. Kim, who has a 4.0 grade-point average, is being recruited by Stanford and Columbia.
Other top performers:
Jamie Jenike, who scored twice to lead Canyon to a 2-0 victory over Mater Dei for the title at the Riverside Poly tournament.
