Former Minnesota Viking coach Bud Grant said he received a death threat because he opposes a fishing and hunting agreement between the state of Minnesota and the Mille Lacs Chippewa tribe.
Grant, an avid outdoorsman and honorary head of the Save Lake Mille Lacs Assn., spoke at a heated rally at the state capitol.
“Late yesterday afternoon, I received a phone call that stated if I showed up here today I could get shot, and then they hung up,” Grant said after the rally.
The state legislature still must approve the proposed settlement, which covers fishing and hunting rights granted to the Mille Lacs Chippewa tribe in an 1837 treaty.
Grant’s group argues that the federal government settled all of the band’s claims with a $9-million payment in 1973. The Chippewa say that settlement did not include hunting and fishing rights.
