The Detroit Tigers welcomed back Kirk Gibson on Wednesday, signing him to a one-year contract. Terms were not disclosed.
Gibson, who will be 36 in May, spent his first nine major league seasons with the Tigers, signing as a first-round draft choice in 1978 after playing baseball and football at Michigan State. He helped the team win its last World Series, in 1984, hitting two home runs in the fifth and deciding game against the San Diego Padres.
In 1988, Gibson delivered another memorable World Series homer as a pinch-hitter against the Oakland Athletics’ Dennis Eckersley in the bottom of the ninth inning, winning Game 1 for the Dodgers.
Gibson appeared in 16 games last season for the Pittsburgh Pirates before announcing his retirement from baseball.
