Speech Garners ‘Super Bowl’ Rating

Television ratings for President Clinton’s address to Congress were within 1% of comparable figures for the Super Bowl, traditionally television’s most-watched program, according to statistics released Thursday by the A.C. Nielsen Co.
Wednesday’s speech averaged a combined 43.7 rating on the ABC, CBS and NBC networks in the 29 major television markets where figures were available. By comparison, Super Bowl XXVII last month had a 43.9 rating in the 28 markets where figures were first available.
When final national figures are announced next week, the total rating could top the Super Bowl’s 45.1, when cable viewership is figured in.
