MISSION VIEJO — Brett Poulos set a Trabuco Hills single-game record with seven three-pointers and finished with a career-high 31 points as the Mustangs beat San Bernardino Pacific, 78-64, in a Southern Section Division II-A playoff game Friday at Trabuco Hills.
The senior guard had 20 points in the first half as Trabuco Hills (21-6) opened a 39-25 lead.
He was seven of eight from the field, including five consecutive three-pointers.
“I felt pretty good in warm-ups,” Poulos said. “They were playing off me in the first half and I was just hitting the open shot.”
Trabuco Hills plays Ayala, a 56-50 winner over La Serna, in the second round Tuesday.
Pacific (13-12) increased its defense on Poulos in the second half, but by then Trabuco Hills’ lead was already established.
Rob Warnick, Trabuco Hills’ other starting guard, also played well.
He scored 14 points on six-of-11 shooting from the field. Senior forward Pat Barnes had 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards. Trabuco Hills scored 26 points off offensive rebounds and won the rebounding battle, 39-32.
