* Kevin Oldham; Pianist Turned to Composing to Leave Legacy

Kevin Oldham, 32, a pianist who began composing in order to leave a musical legacy after he learned he had AIDS. Trained in piano at Northwestern University and the Juilliard School, Oldham made his recital debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1985. He checked himself out of a New York hospital in January in order to perform his well-received major composition, a piano concerto, with his hometown orchestra, the Kansas City Symphony. The concerto, which was his first commission, premiered in 1991 at the Festival of the Atlantic in Point Pleasant, N.J. On Thursday in Kansas City of AIDS.
