FIRST-TEAM PROFILES
Jamie Arundell: CENTER, FILLMORE
Arundell’s game was points, points and more points. The senior was the second-leading scorer in the state with a 29.0 average and scored more than 40 points four times in her career. A Times’ All-Ventura County selection last season when she averaged 24.6 points. Arundell, the Tri-Valley League most valuable player, will attend West Point and play on the Army basketball team.
Ember Brown: GUARD, VENTURA
Most sophomores would have been content, if not thrilled, to average more than 16 points a game and lead her team into the playoffs. But Brown didn’t stop there. After four seniors were dismissed from the team before the Cougars’ first playoff game, the all-sophomore state team member averaged 25.7 points and propelled Ventura into the Division II-A championship game.
Michelle Giordano: FORWARD, BUENA
The two-time Channel League MVP earned Division I All-State honors and is a two-time All-Ventura County selection. In the Southern Section Division I-A championship, Giordano made two free throws with no time remaining to give the Bulldogs a one-point victory over Thousand Oaks, avenging title game defeats to the Lancers the previous two seasons.
Sara Griffin: FORWARD, SIMI VALLEY
The Pioneer junior is in the process of transforming the school record book into her own personal scrapbook. Griffin holds four school records and ranks in the top 10 in seven other categories, including career points and rebounds. She averaged 15.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 4.2 steals this season and should continue her statistical onslaught next season.
Julie Hardy: FORWARD, BUENA
Hardy teamed with Giordano to give the Bulldogs the most potent forward tandem in the county. Hardy, an All-Channel League selection, combined good size with an accurate shot to average 13.5 points. Within Buena’s structured system, she also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 2.4 steals. Hardy, a second-team all-league pick last season, was MVP of the Buena tournament in December.
Marion Jones: FORWARD, THOUSAND OAKS
Jones came oh-so-close to leading the Lancers to their third-consecutive Division I-A championship, scoring 23 points and 15 rebounds in a one-point title game loss to Buena. In an otherwise splendid season, Jones averaged 22.8 points and 14.2 rebounds and helped the Lancers to the state’s No. 1 ranking for much of the season. The 5-foot-11 senior was an All-State selection.
Karli Jungwirth: FORWARD, CAMARILLO
A talented all-around athlete, Jungwirth didn’t have much basketball experience when she started at Camarillo. But the 5-10 junior has made rapid progress. She topped the Scorpions in scoring (11.2) and rebounding (8.2). Her strength is the turnaround jump shot, and in a game against Simi Valley, she hauled in 19 rebounds. Jungwirth also plays volleyball and track.
Rachel McSorley: FORWARD, NORDHOFF
Ranger Coach Jack Smith knew what he had in McSorley when she transferred from Buena last spring--a potential star. And he was right. McSorley was the MVP of three nonleague tournaments and the Frontier League player of the year. She averaged 20.3 points, set a school record for points in a game (36) and led Nordhoff into the Southern Section Division IV-AA semifinals.
Summer Peterson: CENTER, RIO MESA
Summer was hot this winter. The 6-2 junior center was a force near the basket, averaging 11.7 points and 8.7 rebounds, and was named to the All-Channel League team. Rio Mesa Coach Al Walker said that Peterson, who already has good moves with her back to the basket, will play outside with more frequency next season to prepare her for the college game.
Julie Wastell: GUARD, NEWBURY PARK
One half of a talented sophomore duo, Wastell and fellow 10th-grader Kara McKeown has Panther Coach Nori Parvin excited for future years. Wastell, an adept ballhandler and passer, averaged 11.5 points, 3.9 assists and 3.6 steals. A member of the junior varsity last season, her hustle and desire helped lead the Panthers to the Division II-A playoff quarterfinals.
