Former Formula One champion Nelson Piquet drove a race car for the first time since he was seriously injured in practice for the Indianapolis 500 almost a year ago.

The 40-year-old Brazilian suffered a concussion and multiple fractures of both legs and feet when his car spun coming out of the fourth turn and hit the wall head-on. He still walks with a limp.

Piquet rejoined Team Menard at Indianapolis and will team with Indy veterans Gary Bettenhausen and Geoff Brabham for the race May 30.

Hooters is withdrawing its sponsorship of late Winston Cup champion Alan Kulwicki’s racing team.

The Atlanta-based restaurant chain said in a statement it was dropping the sponsorship because of Alan Kulwicki Racing, Inc.’s plans to find a new owner and use a temporary driver.
