MARIAN FAN: State Sen. Marian Bergeson’s effort to become state schools chief got a boost Wednesday as influential Democrat Assemblyman Phillip Isenberg threw his support behind the Newport Beach Republican heading into a pivotal Assembly vote today. . . . Isenberg is a top lieutenant of powerful Speaker Willie Brown, the nominee’s chief foe, so the question now is whether his defection will spur waffling Democrats to back Bergeson. She needs 10 Democrat votes to survive the Assembly.
