TENNIS ROUNDUP : Medvedev Eliminated by Edberg

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg went back to basics to stop Andrei Medvedev’s clay-court run with a 6-4, 6-3 quarterfinal victory Friday in the Monte Carlo Open.

Medvedev, an 18-year-old Ukrainian, had won two tournaments and 13 matches in a row, advancing to No. 11 in the world.

Defending champion Thomas Muster joined Edberg in the semifinals by defeating Spanish qualifier Alex Corretja, 6-2, 6-2.

In the other quarterfinal matches, Cedric Pioline of France defeated Jonas Svensson of Sweden, 6-3, 6-4, and 1991 champion Sergi Bruguera of Spain defeated countryman Carlos Costa, 7-6 (10-8), 6-2.

The semifinals today in the $1.65-million event will match Edberg against Pioline and Bruguera against Muster.

In the past 16 months, Medvedev has improved his world ranking from No. 226 and could break into the top 10 next week.

Top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain defeated Mary Pierce of France, 7-5, 6-1, in the quarterfinals of the La Familia Open at Barcelona.

Fourth-seeded Amanda Coetzer of South Africa advanced with a victory over fifth-seeded Magdalena Maleeva. Coetzer won the first set, 6-4, and led in the second, 4-0, when Maleeva retired because of blisters on her racket hand.

Sabine Hack of Germany defeated Federica Bonsignori of Italy, 6-0, 7-5, and Conchita Martinez ousted Laura Golarsa of Italy , 6-1, 6-3, in the other quarterfinal matches.

The United States Tennis Assn. named Pam Shriver, Lori McNeil, Lindsay Davenport and Ann Grossman to play in the Federation Cup July 19-26 at Frankfurt, Germany. McNeil owns the highest ranking of the four at No. 19. Shriver is No. 28, Davenport No. 41 and Grossman No. 47.

Conspicuous by their absence were more familiar names such as Martina Navratilova, Mary Joe Fernandez and Jennifer Capriati, all ranked among the top seven players in the world.

All had previous commitments.
