SOME VELVET EVENING: European dates were announced this week for the long-anticipated Velvet Underground reunion tour--the first full shows by the original quartet of Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker since 1968. But don’t hold your breath for U.S. shows.

“It didn’t seem to me there was enough response in the U.S. to warrant that,” Reed says, even though the Velvets are often cited as one of the most influential bands on several generations of alternative rockers.

“Not one of the most influential,” Reed insists. “ The most influential, from my point of view. Of course, I’m biased.”

Reed also says not to expect a reunion album. “The most that would come out of it would be a live album and right now it doesn’t look like there will be that. But there certainly won’t be a studio album.”
