The United States struggled to a 3-1 victory over winless Norway at Dortmund, Germany, to gain a berth in the quarterfinals of the World Hockey Championships.
Tony Amonte and Darren Turcotte, whose New York Rangers failed to make the NHL playoffs, ignited Team USA by scoring two goals within 40 seconds in the second period after the Norwegians had taken a 1-0 lead.
The victory left Team USA in second place in the pool B standings, behind the Czech Republic, which routed France 6-2. Germany and Finland have also qualified for the playoffs starting in Munich on Tuesday.
In Munich, Eric Lindros had his second consecutive six-point game, scoring five goals and setting up one as unbeaten Canada routed Italy, 11-2, and two-time defending champion Sweden beat Russia, 5-2, to also clinch a berth in the quarterfinals.
