Barcelona platform bronze medalist Mary Ellen Clark of the Ft. Lauderdale Diving Team defended her U.S. women’s platform title at the 1993 Phillips 66 National Diving Championships. Russ Bertram, also of Ft. Lauderdale, was a surprise winner in men’s platform.
Clark, 30, took the lead in the sixth round with her highest scoring dive, a reverse 2 1/2 somersault tuck. She went on to post a 412.24-401.40 victory over her 14-year-old teammate, Jenny Keim.
In men’s diving, Bertram, 27, scored 567.42 to win the first national title of his career and hold off challenges from five-time U.S. champion Pat Evans, 1988 Olympian Patrick Jeffrey and Barcelona silver medalist Scott Donie.
