It Was an All-Star Night for Soccer

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Jill Greb got quite a workout Saturday night, but not as much as the El Segundo High goalkeeper was accustomed to in the second annual South Bay All-Star Soccer Classic at Torrance High.

The match featured senior players from the Pioneer League against the Bay and Ocean Leagues.

The 5-foot-11 Greb had eight saves and did not give up a goal in 40 minutes of play for the Pioneer team in a match that ended in a 1-1 tie.

Greb, who competes on the volleyball and swim teams, was playing with a partially dislocated shoulder suffered in a swim meet.

“It went numb when I fell on my arm after a stop,” Greb said. “I’m just glad I didn’t have to make too many.”

Greb, who will attend UC Santa Barbara in the fall, proved quite adept at making saves this season. She set a Southern Section record with 197, breaking the previous mark by 47.

She set another record with 34 saves against Pioneer League champion Torrance. The Tartars, who advanced to the Division I quarterfinals this season, had seven players on the 15-member squad.

“It was nice to have them on your team instead of playing against you,” Greb said. “They played a lot better defense than I’m used to and it was nice to not have a shot taken at you every two seconds.”

Fiona Mason of Torrance scored on a head shot off a pass from Tartar teammate Kim Blankinship to give the Pioneer team a 1-0 lead at the 35-minute mark of the first half.

Kelly Simons of Bishop Montgomery tied the score at the 61-minute mark, knocking in a shot from just inside the goalkeeper box after taking a pass from Chadwick’s Amy Mollenkamp.

Ernesto Gutierrez and Brad Bentley of West Torrance each scored goals to lift the Pioneer team to a 2-1 victory in the boys’ match.

Gutierrez and Bentley scored at the 36-minute and 45-minute marks to give the Pioneer team a 2-0 lead.

Melquiades Monje of Morningside scored on a sliding left-footed kick with five minutes to play to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Bay-Ocean team was unable to get another shot on goal before time expired.

Gutierrez and Danilo Leguizamon of Hawthorne were the most valuable players for the Pioneer and Bay-Ocean teams.

November Wallace of Torrance and Erin Donnell of Santa Monica were selected as the MVPs for the Pioneer and Bay-Ocean teams in the girls’ match.
