Peak performances in all-star games are becoming a habit for Cleveland High forward Shawn Bankhead.
Two weeks after scoring 46 points in a City Section vs. Southern Section all-star game at Cal State L.A., Bankhead scored 21 to lead the City to a 127-112 victory over the Southern Section in the Valley All-Star Shoot-Out on Saturday night at Pierce College.
Although Bankhead didn’t match his earlier point total, his fifteen first-half points--six on dunks--sparked the victory.
“It was nice playing with everyone that was the best on their team,” Bankhead said.
The Southern Section was led by Paul Foster of Thousand Oaks, who scored 30 points and was named Southern Section team MVP. Bankhead was named MVP of the City team.
A put-in by Foster with nine minutes remaining closed the deficit to 99-86, but the Southern Section would get no closer.
Joe Wyatt of Kennedy and Markee Brown of El Camino Real added 17 and 13 points for the City. Palmdale’s Ty Gaines scored 25 and Simi Valley’s Ryan Briggs added 15 for the Southern Section.
Buena’s Julie Hardy scored 23 points to lead the Southern Section girls’ team to a 74-62 victory over the City Section.
Arizona-bound Sheneya Harris of Kennedy, who was named City 4-A co-player of the year, led the City team with 24 points. Harris and Hardy were named MVPs of their respective teams.
