Nation IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Three Carjackers Get Life Sentences

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A judge imposed life sentences on the first three defendants convicted under a federal law involving a deadly carjacking. U.S. District Judge Patricia Fawsett, following sentencing guidelines, handed down non-parole life terms, plus 25 years, to the youths convicted Feb. 25 of the execution-style slayings of two young men and the wounding of a third. Jermaine Foster, 19, Gerard Booker, 22, and Alf Catholic, 19, will now be tried in state circuit court on first-degree murder and attempted-murder charges. Prosecutors said they would ask for the death penalty. Tammy George, 26, one of the victim’s girlfriend, told the jury the black attackers cursed her for going out with whites but that they did not want to kill “a sister.” All the victims were white. A fourth defendant pleaded guilty and testified against the other three.
