Two Pay TV Licenses Awarded: The Australian government has awarded pay television licenses to two local telecommunications technology companies that were the high bidders, with offers totaling about $276 million. The winners are Ucom Pty. Ltd. and Hi Vision Ltd., which currently have no media interests. Unsuccessful bidders were New York-based media-entertainment company Time Warner Inc. and a consortium that included media magnates Rupert Murdoch, who heads News Corp., and Kerry Packer, who controls Australia’s leading commercial television operator, Nine Network.
