WORLD IN BRIEF : AFGHANISTAN : Hundreds Are Hurt, Killed in Fighting

Afghan government jets bombed positions captured by their guerrilla foes in three days of fierce fighting in Kabul, and hospital workers reported hundreds more casualties. Artillery exchanges and street clashes raged into the night, with no significant advances by either side. Hospitals admitted more than 200 people. State-run Kabul Radio reported 59 deaths, many of them women and children, and about 150 more in the previous two days. Doctors said the toll was certainly much higher because few dead and few injured women are taken to hospitals.
