4,000 Storm Yugoslav Parliament

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia — Stone-throwing demonstrators, protesting the government of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, clashed with riot police outside the Yugoslav Parliament on Tuesday night.

About 4,000 people attempted to break into the Parliament, where earlier in the day an opposition deputy had been knocked to the floor by a member of the hard-line Serbian Radical Party.

The demonstrators, chanting “Rise up Belgrade” and “Justice,” smashed windows in the Parliament building. Witnesses said several people were hurt in the protest, a rare outburst of public opposition to the Milosevic government.

The protesters were angered by the attack on Mihailo Markovic, of the Serbian Renewal Movement, who was knocked to the floor outside the debating chamber by Serbian Radical Party member and former boxer Branislav Vakic. The two men clashed over the ouster of federal President Dobrica Cosic, forced out earlier by ultranationalists teaming up with Milosevic’s Socialist Party.
