British Airways Workers Poised for 24-Hour Strike

LONDON — British Airways cabin crews and ground staff called a 24-hour strike for midnight Thursday after talks failed to resolve a dispute over pay and working conditions.
The Transport and General Workers Union announced Wednesday night that its 17,000 members would walk out, but said it “remains willing to resume negotiations whenever the company is ready to reconsider its position.”
A union spokesman predicted that the action--involving cabin crew, clerical and ground staff based in Britain and abroad--would severely disrupt the airline’s operations worldwide.
British Airways said it hoped the strike could be averted.
“In view of the progress we made today, after five hours of constructive talks and our wish for future meetings, this is wholly unwarranted,” the airline said in a statement.
British Airways pilots are voting separately later this week on whether to call a strike over the carrier’s plans to transfer some flights to a subsidiary that pays workers about 30% less.
