Getty Offers Free Exhibit on Library

The Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities will present a free exhibit titled “Building, Art and Text: the Los Angeles Central Library” Sept. 11 through Dec. 18 in its seventh-floor gallery at 401 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica.

As part of the citywide celebration of the library’s October reopening, the exhibit examines the building’s design history and iconography, focusing on the collaboration among architects Bertram G. Goodhue and Carleton Monroe Winslow, sculptor Lee Lawrie, painters Julian Garnsey, Albert Herter and Dean Cornwell, and philosopher Hartley Burr Alexander. It includes drawings, photographs, cartoons and artifacts concerning the historic building.

Also, the J. Paul Getty Museum this fall will offer a family program, “Pens, Parchment, and Pages,” featuring bookbinding demonstrations and a workshop with master calligrapher Mark Stone. Advance enrollment is required; 459-7611, Ext. 300.
