COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Solve Top Goalie, Upset No. 7 Washington

Cal State Fullerton, facing one of the best goalies in the nation, defeated Washington, 3-1, in the first round of the Titan Soccer Classic Friday at Fullerton.

Dusty Hudock, a preseason All-American, allowed an average of 0.5 goals last season and allowed more than one in only one game. But the Titans got first-half goals from Mark Vaught and Matt Bradbury to lead, 2-1, at the break.

Bradbury added another goal in the second half for the Titans (3-0), ranked 19th by Soccer American.

Charles Sletten scored on a penalty kick for Washington (2-1) in the first half. The Huskies are ranked seventh in the poll.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Biola 2, Chapman 2--Dean Laird and Armando Orizaba scored both of Chapman’s goals late in the second half. Goalkeeper Craig Bennett had eight saves for Chapman. The game was called at the end of regulation because of darkness.

Southern California College 2, Northwest Nazarene 0--With strong defensive play by Chris Chaparro, Southern California College (1-3) won it first. Jorge Perez scored the first goal unassisted early in the first half. Pete Schumerth scored the second on an assist by Lance Baker late in the second half. Northwest Nazarene dropped to 2-3.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UC Santa Barbara 2, UC Irvine 0--After 78 scoreless minutes, the 18th-ranked Gauchos broke through with a goal by Phronsie Franco on a free kick. With less than two minutes remaining, Amy Hunter scored for UCSB (2-0). Irvine dropped to 2-1.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

California 3, UC Irvine 0--Cara Dane had 20 kills to help the host Bears (4-0) to a 15-1, 15-5, 15-9 sweep. Popi Edwards had 12 kills for the Anteaters (3-2).

Concordia (Irvine) 3, Concordia (Austin, Tex.) 2--Amy Bonacorsi had 23 kills as visiting Concordia of Irvine rallied for a 12-15, 1-15, 18-16, 15-8, 15-11 victory in Austin.
