Park Center Sought at No Cost to County

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved a motion urging state officials to turn over to the county a vacant visitors’ center at the Castaic Lake State Recreation Area.
The state Department of Water Resources has been trying to sell the facility to government agencies for more than a year. County officials are attempting to acquire the property at no cost before bidding is opened to the public.
Copies of the motion by Supervisor Mike Antonovich will be sent to Gov. Pete Wilson, state Sen. Cathy Wright, Assemblyman Pete Knight and State Resources Agency Secretary Douglas Wheeler.
“We want to go to the top, so to speak,” said Peter Whittingham, parks and recreation deputy for Antonovich. “This motion should indicate that the board is supportive of acquiring the facility.”
Whittingham said the facility, which sits on seven acres overlooking the lake, would be used by the county Department of Parks and Recreation to help offset the cost of running the park.
The county has maintained the 8,000-acre site since 1972 as an attraction for boating, fishing camping and picnicking.
