West Hollywood : Cat Licensing Law Passes

The Westside’s first cat-licensing law goes into effect in West Hollywood next month.
The City Council on Monday gave final approval to the measure, which is aimed at helping to recover lost animals and encourage spaying and neutering. West Hollywood is the fourth city in Los Angeles County with such a law.
Under the ordinance, sponsored by Councilman Paul Koretz, licenses will cost $5 for altered cats and $10 for unaltered cats. A half-price discount is available to senior citizens, the poor and disabled.
Supporters said licensing will require cat owners to share the costs of animal control and help reduce the number of stray cats destroyed yearly by the county Department of Animal Care and Control, which already requires licenses for cats in unincorporated areas.
Opponents had attacked the law as a needless new levy that will be impossible to enforce.
