SHERMAN OAKS : Developer to Start Hillside Soil Tests

Soil testing was expected to begin today on the largest piece of undeveloped land in Sherman Oaks to determine what kind of development might be feasible there.
The testing, which will involve a drill rig and a bulldozer, will be on a 90-acre parcel west of Stone Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains, said Ken Chang, a consultant to Shawbeth Inc., a company that plans to develop the land.
“These are simply soil and geography tests that all property owners must do,” Chang said, noting that the company has no specific plans for developing the acreage, other than that it would include single-family houses.
He said the public would be kept aware of developments as they occur.
“We work very closely with the surrounding hillside communities on our projects,” Chang said, adding that the company’s Mulholland Estates project was built with the approval of several homeowners organizations.
Richard Close, president of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Assn., said his group will watch the project closely.
“Obviously the testing means they are going forward with development plans,” Close said. “We’ll want to see what those new plans are.”
