Jewelry District

* I am compelled to correct a misperception that was created as a result of several statements attributed to me in Timothy Williams’ article, “A Case With Many Facets” (Sept. 29).
Regrettably, the article has reinforced an undeserved image regarding the merchants in the Los Angeles jewelry district. Further, the observations I made to Williams, when viewed out of context, serve only to fuel the perception that the downtown jewelry industry is replete with corruption.
As with any segment of society, there is and likely always will be an unprincipled element who will prey upon the unsuspecting. However, the vast majority of jewelers downtown continue to make a conscious and determined effort to administer a strict code of ethics regarding the marketing and sale of diamonds and other precious gems. These jewelers are honorable and hard-working business people with families who are struggling to earn a living in an unforgiving industry and in a dire economic climate.
I stand by my comments to Williams regarding the presence of a corrupt element downtown. However, these companies are the anomalies and do not accurately reflect the standards and business practices of the jewelers downtown.
The article should not be viewed as a blanket indictment of the jewelry industry. Rather, it should serve as a sobering reminder that when dealing with any industry or profession, the consuming public must always be discerning about with whom they contract and diligent in verifying all representations.
