COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NATION : Pitt Breaks Losing Streak
- Share via
Johnny Majors avoided what would have been the longest losing streak of his 26-year college coaching career Thursday night as Pitt ended a six-game slide with a 21-10 victory over Rutgers at East Rutherford, N.J.
Majors had lost six in a row twice before, at Tennessee in 1988 and at Iowa State in 1968-69.
The Panthers, 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the Big East, forced four turnovers by Rutgers (4-4, 2-2) and made two excellent defensive stands early.
Rutgers took a 3-0 lead, but Pitt scored the next 21 points, with freshman Billy West sandwiching two short touchdowns runs around a three-yard scoring pass from John Ryan to Junior Green.
