GRAPEVINE, Tex. — About 150 high school students walked out over a ban on a popular brand of thick-soled boots sometimes worn by racist skinheads.
“It’s not about blacks. It’s not about whites. It’s about shoes and freedom to wear what we want to wear. This is America,” Hanne Leon, a senior at Grapevine High School said Wednesday.
Beginning this week, students wearing clunky, lace-up Doc Martens boots were sent home. But after Wednesday’s walkout, the administration backed off on the ban while a dress code committee reviews the policy, school district spokesman Riney Jordan said.
