Nation IN BRIEF : ILLINOIS : Chicago Schools May Be Closed Next Week

A federal appeals court overturned a lower court’s order that has kept Chicago public schools from closing, but the ruling was delayed until next week. State law requires Chicago schools to operate with a balanced budget, but the district has a $298,000 deficit. The Board of Education wants to close the gap with teacher concessions, loans and bonds, but the state Legislature must approve any borrowing by the district.
