“Soldier of Orange” (1978), directed by Paul Verhoeven, 144 minutes. Not rated. This Dutch film is based on the autobiography of Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, a carefree, disengaged university student who turns into a patriot during World War II. The action revolves around the often costly cloak-and-dagger attempts to thwart Nazi plans, but the film’s real strength comes from its realistic characters, who can be cruel and petty as well as heroic.
