Japan to Import More Rice: To make up for a shortfall in the domestic harvest, the government will import an additional 900,000 tons of rice in the fiscal year ending in March, the Food Agency announced. In October, the government announced an emergency import of 200,000 tons of the grain, calling it a onetime exception to Japan’s long standing ban on foreign rice imports. Because of a cool, rainy summer, the country’s domestic rice harvest this year is expected to be its worst since World War II. Some analysts predict Japan may need to import another 1 million tons of rice in the first half of fiscal 1994.
