OUTLOOK
Higashi will inherit only three returners from a team that advanced to the second round of the Southern Section Division II-A playoffs last season. The Rebels hope preseason luck won’t be an early indication of the rest of the season. They will be without senior Karri Burgner, who suffered a back injury, and will miss the entire season. Nguyen will have different priorities at the point this season. The lack of “go-to” players leaves Nguyen with the responsibility of floor leader, trying spread the ball to everyone. Jessica Hernandez will step into the starting role to replace Burgner, and will also be the team captain. According to Higashi, Stevens, Diana Hernandez and Pendergraff all know their roles coming off the bench. Miller will be fighting for a starting spot on a team that has a surplus of guards and small forwards. The Rebels will suffer from lack of leadership and height, but Higashi doesn’t believe it should be much of a hindrance. “We are blessed with a lot of hard workers,” he said. “The lack of height will not hurt our game plan. Our biggest loss is in terms of leadership, but that should be provided by Jessica. From top to bottom, everyone is hungry to learn.”
