OUTLOOK
University reached the Divison II-AA quarterfinals last season under Bernal, a first-year basketball coach. He says this year’s version should be the best team in school history. The reason for his optimism includes the return of Stanley, a Southern Section second-team player, who is being considered by UC Davis and UC Irvine. According to Bernal, Stanley “made the top 20 at Superstars Camp this summer.” But one player doesn’t make a team. Also back is Snavely, the team’s top three-point shooter who was injured most of the year, and Cross, who was the first player off the bench. Kirk, a sophomore, starts in the pivot after playing a year of junior varsity. Another new face on the varsity is Medina, a transfer from Mater Dei who will help ease the loss of point guard Nicole Gallardo. Stokes, a freshman, is the quickest player on the team and will see a lot of game time. Overall athletic ability, scoring offense and speed are strengths, but the Trojans’ major weakness could cause them some problems: It’s defense. University’s key games will be against Tustin and Newport Harbor, which are likely to vie for second place.
