GTE Airfone to Offer Ground-to-Air Service in 1994: The Oak Brook, Ill., company said it will begin offering the telephone service early next year, pending government certification expected by mid-December. Engineers have successfully tested the GenStar system to be introduced on United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and USAir shuttle flights. The all-digital system will let passengers transmit data from personal computers, send and receive faxes and make calls from one plane to another or even seat-to-seat. GTE Airfone is a wholly owned subsidiary of GTE Corp. Telephones were first installed in aircraft 10 years ago.
