Cities, Counties Offer Free Plan to Recycle Trees

TIMES STAFF WRITER

After the holidays, Christmas trees don’t deserve to be treated like trash. They deserve to be treated like mulch.

That’s why the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County is providing free tree recycling to residents throughout the area--and even a free bag of mulch at recycling drop-off points.

So far 56 cities, Los Angeles County and Ventura County have agreed to bring Christmas trees for recycling at four landfills run by the Sanitation Districts.

Other cities in the county are sponsoring tree recycling programs, separate from the districts.

To find out how to recycle your tree, call your city hall. Most San Gabriel Valley cities will be picking up trees from the curb in the next few weeks.

Recycling programs normally require that tree stands and decorations be removed. Generally trees taller than five feet should be cut in half. Flocked trees are acceptable.
