Four hundred U.S. troops left Somalia for home. As the Americans flew out of Mogadishu airport, leaving 5,315 troops in Somalia and 3,820 aboard ships offshore, Somali gunmen tried unsuccessfully to ambush German peacekeepers riding in an armored vehicle.
