Hawkins Leads Long Beach Over San Jose

SAN JOSE — Juaquin Hawkins scored a career-high 21 points as Long Beach State defeated San Jose State, 78-71, in the Big West Conference Saturday night.
Long Beach State, 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the Big West, also got 14 points from Terrence O’Kelley and 13 from Eric Brown as it defeated San Jose State for the fifth consecutive time.
San Jose State (5-7, 1-3) was led by Les Shepherd, who had a career-high 18 points. Shepherd had scored only 14 points this season. Jason Allen added 16 for the Spartans.
Shepherd gave San Jose its last lead, 48-46, on a steal and layup with 12:56 remaining in the game. Long Beach answered with a 10-2 run, keyed by Tyrone Mays’ three-point basket, that gave the 49ers a 56-50 lead with 8:11 to go.
The Spartans didn’t get closer than four points thereafter.
Terry Cannon, San Jose State’s leading scorer with a 17.5-point average entering the game, was limited to five points.
