NBA ROUNDUP : Jeff Malone’s Shot Lifts Jazz Over Nuggets

Jeff Malone’s 18-foot shot from the corner with 12 seconds to play squelched a remarkable rally by the Denver Nuggets and gave the Utah Jazz a 96-95 victory Tuesday night at Denver.

The Jazz led in the final minute, 94-86, but Rodney Rogers made three three-point baskets in 8.8 seconds, giving the Nuggets a 95-94 lead with 20 seconds remaining. Denver stole two inbounds passes by Karl Malone, leading to the second and third of Rogers’ three-pointers.

After Jeff Malone’s basket, Rogers tried another shot, but it was blocked by Tyrone Corbin. LaPhonso Ellis got the rebound for Denver, but lost control and time ran out after a wild scramble under the basket.

Karl Malone scored 24 points and John Stockton had 22 points and 12 assists for the Jazz.

San Antonio 110, Washington 90--David Robinson had 31 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists at San Antonio for his NBA-best fourth triple-double of the season, leading the Spurs to their eighth consecutive victory.

Michael Adams scored 25 points for the Bullets, who lost for the 18th time in 23 road games.

Dallas 108, Minnesota 105--Doug Smith scored five of his 20 points in overtime, including a key tip-in with 31 seconds to play, to lead the Mavericks at Dallas.

The Mavericks are 4-1 against the Timberwolves, but 1-41 against the rest of the NBA.

Milwaukee 106, Houston 98--Eric Murdock scored 28 points and led six Buck players in double figures at Milwaukee.

Milwaukee, with a record of only 14-33, played its best game of the season in winning for only the sixth time in 23 home games.

Cleveland 112, New Jersey 104--Mark Price scored 26 points and stifled a late Net threat by making four foul shots in the closing seconds at Richfield, Ohio.

The Cavaliers’ 11th victory in 15 games moved them two games over .500 for the first time this season.

Portland 124, Sacramento 100--Clyde Drexler, who has made a career-low 40% of his shots this season, snapped out of a shooting slump with 21 points on nine-for-15 shooting in Portland’s rout of Sacramento in Oregon.

Buck Williams’ 15 rebounds put him over the 11,000-rebound plateau, making him one of only 16 NBA players to reach the milestone.
