Crime has emerged as a top concern in Seal Beach since a string of armed robberies last summer. The City Council will decide how to spend nearly $120,000 of Proposition 172 money later this year. Residents who live in the Old Town district want a police substation in the neighborhood. Others say resources should not be concentrated in just one area. Here’s how council members suggest strengthening police services:
George Brown
Increase police patrols; would do more to prevent crime than building a substation.
William J. Doane
Increase police patrols and crime-prevention programs such as Neighborhood Watch.
Gwen Forsythe
Add a substation or increase patrols at the pier and Old Town; install video equipment in troublesome beach areas.
Marilyn Bruce Hastings
Convert a portion of a lifeguard station at the Seal Beach Pier into a police substation.
Frank Laszlo
Place a police substation in a Main Street retail building in order to deter crime in the central business district.
