Zenith Chosen by Digital HDTV Alliance: The so-called Digital HDTV grand alliance said it selected Zenith Electronics Corp.’s technology as the digital transmission subsystem for the high-definition television system it will propose to the Federal Communications Commission. The alliance, in cooperation with the FCC, last week concluded extensive testing and selected Zenith’s VSB technology over General Instrument’s QAM transmission subsystems. “It’s the last piece of the puzzle,” said Dick Muldoon, a spokesman for American Telephone & Telegraph Co., a member of the alliance. The HDTV system is scheduled for final verification testing in late 1994 and final field testing in early 1995. HDTV aims to provide movie-quality digital images on a flatter, larger screen.
