Grants Pick Up Earthquake Pieces

California Community Foundation has awarded grants to the following organizations that suffered earthquake damage: Library Foundation of Los Angeles--$59,000 to replenish bilingual reading materials; Venice Family Clinic--$20,000 to support lab costs and X-ray fees; Hollygrove, a North Hills home for orphaned children--$10,000 for earthquake repairs; Senior Health and Peer Counseling, Santa Monica--$22,000 for replacement of furniture; Wellness Community, Santa Monica--$26,000 for moving costs, increased rent and improvements needed to relocate the agency’s programs that were destroyed; Humane Animal Rescue Team, San Fernando Valley--$7,500 to help cover three months of boarding expenses, pound rescues, vet bills, transportation and telephone costs. In all, $391,269 was granted to these and other organizations.

American Red Cross will receive $10,000 for its Earthquake Relief Fund. The money was raised at Roxbury’s 4th annual Oscar Party, hosted by Sunset Entertainment and Movieline Magazine.

Crippled Children’s Society of Southern California received a $7,500 grant from the Rotary Club of Los Angeles. The money will pay for improvements at the society’s children’s camp.

The Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, UCLA and the Kenneth Norris Jr. Cancer Center at USC received $400,000 each in research awards from Stop Cancer, hosts of the March 9 gala at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Stop Cancer holds fund-raising events throughout the year for the two centers.

Calvary School’s “Voyage to Excellence” netted $90,000 for computers, software, library books and photography equipment. The March 26 event, co-hosted by Vicki Apatoff and Carlyn Peterson, was held at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel.

Torrance Memorial Medical Center has announced the completion of a five-year pledge of $1 million to the center’s Health Care Foundation. The check for $185,000 exceeding the pledge by $50,000, with money raised at fund-raising activities and proceeds from its gift shop.
