Bailey, Howse Named City Times’ Players of Year

Toby Bailey, who set 10 school records at Loyola High, was named City Times’ 1994 Boys’ Player of the Year during an awards breakfast April 24 at the University Hilton.
Crenshaw’s Kimberly Howse won the Girls’ Player of the Year award, the second consecutive season a Cougar has been honored.
Verbum Dei boys’ Coach Mike Kearney and Roosevelt girls’ Coach Lorenzo Garcia were honored as Coaches of the Year.
UCLA Coach Jim Harrick, Bailey’s future mentor, was the keynote speaker.
Bailey, who averaged 22.5 points, set school records for most points in a season (631), most points in a career (2,022), most field goals in a season (235), most field goals in a career (715), most field goal attempts in a season (458), and most field goal attempts in a career (1,643).
A four-year starter, Bailey also set school records for most free throw attempts in a career (612), three-point field goals in a game (five), most three-point field goals in a career (71) and most games played in a career (102).
Howse, who averaged 20 points, lived up to her preseason billing as one of the state’s top players.
She led the Cougars to their second straight City Section 4-A title, earned All-City honors for the second consecutive year and was named City 4-A Player of the Year.
Kearney led Verbum Dei to the Southern Section Division IV championship and the Southern Section Regional IV finals, where the Eagles lost to Lincoln.
Under Garcia, Roosevelt won the Southeastern Conference title for the fourth time in six seasons and reached the City 4-A finals.
