Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : No Injuries, Little Damage in 2 Fires

LANCASTER — Two unrelated fires sent thick clouds of smoke skyward over the east side of the city Friday afternoon but caused no injuries and little property damage, fire officials said.
About 200 acres of brush burned shortly after noon near 75th Street East and Avenue H-8, said Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Mike Tomlinson. More than 50 firefighters and inmate crew members fought the blaze.
Flames approached two houses and a church in the remote desert area, but the structures were not damaged, largely because brush had been cleared away within 50 feet, Tomlinson said.
Sparks from a short-circuited power line apparently touched off the fire, he said.
The second blaze, reported at 2 p.m., consumed rubbish, abandoned vehicles and firewood in a yard near 5th Street East and Avenue K. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes, after it had damaged a vehicle, Fire Capt. Bill Glancy said.
The cause of the second blaze remained under investigation.
