SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — A local politician and a high school student were charged Thursday with trying to steal $10,000 in prize money from a charity fishing tournament by lying about who caught the prize-winning fish.
Scott Allen, 18, paid a $15 registration fee along with 800 other anglers and appeared to have reeled in a specially tagged walleye on May 8.
But the Iowa Great Lakes Chamber of Commerce said it discovered that Ron Sears, a Spencer, Iowa, city councilman who was not registered, actually caught the walleye and gave it to Allen.
