Singapore May Buy 18 U.S. Fighter Jets

WASHINGTON — Singapore is interested in buying 18 FA-18 fighter jets at a cost of $1.5 billion, the Pentagon told Congress on Friday.
The sale would also include spare engines, 268,000 rounds of ammunition, 24 AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, 50 AIM-7M Sparrow missiles, repair parts and other supplies, a Pentagon statement said.
Congress has 30 days to block the FA-18 sale.
Although relations with Singapore have been strained over the recent caning of an American teen-ager accused of vandalism, the Pentagon said in its statement that the sale “would contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping improve the security of a friendly country.”
The prime contractor for the sale would be McDonnell Douglas Aerospace Co. in St. Louis.
