Wonderful Whidbey

As a refugee from L.A., I felt some apprehension in reading “Nearby Whidbey Island, a Gem on Puget Sound” (May 1). We moved here four years ago after 25 years in L.A. Whidbey is a great place to visit, but unless your readers are willing to trade a BMW for an old pickup truck and the cellular phone for a fishing pole, I wouldn’t recommend moving here. If L.A. is the fast lane, this is most certainly the slow country lane, and we want to keep it that way.

I don’t know if anyone else on Whidbey Island has read your article, but if they have I am certain they are holding their sides just as I am. To base an article about Whidbey on Coupeville would be like writing about Washington D.C., after seeing only the bus station. Coupeville is a dingy one-block town where island residents go once a year to buy a dog license at the court house or to visit a sick friend in the County Hospital. The Captain Whidbey Inn is a delightful place. Please send someone back to do a comprehensive on our beautiful island.
