Stanford Faculty Votes to Revive Failing Grade

STANFORD — Seeking to curtail grade inflation, Stanford University faculty leaders voted overwhelmingly Thursday to reinstate a failing grade and make it tougher for students to retake classes.
The Faculty Senate decision came after two lengthy meetings and weeks of contentious debate on campus that saw compromise policies proposed by some students and professors.
“I think what the faculty has done is send a clear message to students to take the life of the mind seriously,” said Gail Mahood, chairwoman of the faculty committee that proposed the changes.
She said the new policy will reduce the number of A’s and Bs.
